“Why Do Fireflies Have To Die So Soon?”
How often does it happen that we see some war taking place somewhere in the world, we feel bad about it for a few minutes and then we choose to neglect the entire topic just to keep ourselves thoughtless for a bit?
Well, knowing all the history of mankind, there cannot be a society without a war. Whether it can be genocide, boundary conflicts, National issues or anything. War just happens and we cannot do anything about it as an individual.
Rounding around this topic, it 1988 released the heart-touching, tragic animated movie, ‘Graves of the Fireflies’ by Isao Takahata. How a common family, Siblings suffer during the war. A tragic incident happens. A little sister Setsuko is in the age when she should be playing in the house’s backyard along with her brother. She has absolutely no idea what's going on around the world. Why their life has changed all of a sudden? Why the atmosphere around them has become so disturbing? Why her older brother is acting so precipitously to survive? Her brother, Seita, who should be studying at his age, is finding ways to get him and his younger sister to survive.
It's based on an semi-autobiographical novel, written by Akiyuki Nosaka about world War 2. Despite the heart-wrenching story, the dialogues between these siblings are something that breaks you into tears.
This movie questions and makes us think about a lot of things.

The human instinct to have such genocides, wars happening all around the globe for various reasons and the helplessness of the common people in these circumstances. We, as a third person in this situation can do nothing but feel helpless towards them. But, being or feeling helpless is the last thing we can do whereas the people who have to go through it to survive have the only option to fight. Fight for their life, and then, there comes the struggle. Struggle to have at least one meal a day. Struggle to protect loved ones. Struggle to get a non-fearful sleep. Struggle for acceptance.
